Ukrainian Refugee update:
Today with only a few hours noticed we purchased, prepared and cooked supper for the refugees with only a few hours notice (see previous post). When we arrived we found there to be about 200 people left at the camp. The USA is no longer allowing the refugees to enter the USA from Tijuana. This camp will be shut down permanently, likely on Sunday, but we don’t know for sure. Everyone is waiting to be flown to Mexico City where they will have to go through the regular process of obtaining a visa, and they also must have a sponsor, to be able to enter the Usa. This process will take much longer than the way things were being done to be able to enter the Usa from Tijuana.
Everything from the camp has to be transported to Mexico City via a semi (beds, blankets, cooking supplies, chairs and anything that will fit). Most of the camp is already packed up because the semi was supposed to arrive 3 days ago but still hasn’t shown up. No one knows what exactly is going on.
With everything and everyone in limbo, food is in short supply and this evening as Randy, Laurisa and some of the girls head back to Ensenada right now, Melody and they girls who stayed behind today for school are shopping and picking up food for our return tomorrow morning to serve breakfast. We will be getting up at 3:30am to cook and prepare the food and be in Tijuana by 8am. We have a 2 hour drive one way so when it’s all said and done it’s quite a long day!
